3 Amazing things to do in Laos

Laos, a beautiful country sqeezed in between Thailand, Myanmar, China, Vietnam and Cambodia offers a rich history and beautiful nature. With Laos being one of the poorest countries in South East Asia it feels like travelling back in time. If you’re planning a trip to South East Asia you should consider visiting Laos. Here are three good reasons why you should visit Laos.

1. Slowboat to Luang Prabang

If you’re travelling Loas and you’re not in a rush, taking the slow boat is a perfect way to explore Laos. The slow boat takes two days and you will slowly cruise down the Mekong river and pass by small villages along the way.  This is a unique and relaxing way to see the Laotian countryside and definitely one of the most memorable things we did in Laos.

Location: The slow boat starts in Huay Xai, you sleep one night in Pakbeng and then arrive in Luang Prabang the next day.

Price: 300.000kip ($18) for a two day slow boat

Accommodation in Pakbeng: This is not included in the slow boat price and can be be booked in advance or when you arrive there. Check out booking.com or agoda.com for booking in advance but there will be a lot of people at the pier when you arrive. We stayed at a place called Thippaphone, ac room for two people 150.000kip/night ($9).

2. Hot air ballon ride

Have you ever dreamed of flying in a hot air balloon? Believe it or not but Laos is one of the cheapest places in the world to do it and it also offers magical views over Vang Vieng and the surrounding mountains. I’ve always been a bit scared of heights but going with a hot air balloon was really smooth and peaceful. We did a sunset ride and it was beautiful to see the sun set over the mountains. I would definitely recommend it if this has been on your bucket-list for long.

Location: Vang Vieng, Laos

Price: Starts from $100, usually includes pick up and drop off at your accommodation.

3. Kuang Si Waterfall

I’ve always loved exploring and finding beautiful waterfalls when I travel.  The Kuang Si waterfalls located outside of Luang Prabang is probably the most beautiful ones I’ve ever seen! The waterfall contains of several pools of turquoise water which you can take a refreshing swim in. The main waterfall has a drop of 60 meters and if you are a bit adventurous you can hike up to the top.

Location: 29km south of Luang Prabang

How to get there: If you’re comfortable driving a scooter I would recommend you driving a scooter there, then you have more freedom to organise the day as you want. There are also taxis, tuktuks and mini vans that goes to the waterfall.

Price: 25.000Kip ($1.5) for entrance and 2000Kip ($0.12) for parking the bike
